Buying an AFL Jersey as a Gift? How to Make Sure They Will Love It

by Cecil Hanson

You're buying an AFL jersey for someone, you want it to be a surprise but alas, you don't know what team they support. Being in this situation can feel like a nightmare, but luckily, there's an easy way out. With just a few pieces of information about someone, you can easily guess what team they like or at least buy them a jersey they will appreciate. Take a look at these ideas and then check out a site like Jerseys Megastore to see what the jerseys actually look like.

1. Location is key

AFL teams are designated based on geographic regions. In most cases, the gift recipient likes the team that's closest to them. If they live in Sydney, for example, chances are they will love a Sydney Swans AFL jersey.

2. History is important

Not everybody loves the team based in their neighbourhood, and if you'd prefer to try another angle, consider promoting a team related to the gift recipient's family history. For example, if you are giving an AFL jersey to your nephew who lives in Sydney but his dad grew up in Melbourne, give him a Melbourne Demons AFL jersey.

The jersey doesn't necessarily need to represent someone's favourite team. They will find it special because it nods to something important about their history.

3. Play it old school

Along with looking at jerseys that have personal significance, instead of getting something that is trendy now, look for something old school. Consider researching old teams and wins and giving an AFL jersey that represents an old player or an old team. Even look for vintage style jerseys.

4. Everybody loves the victor

Instead of trying to figure out the favourite team of the person you are giving the jersey to, just go for the best. Look up the best teams in the AFL league, and buy its jersey. Everyone likes to be on the side of the victor.

While the best clubs are constantly changing, as of 2015, many sports analysts considered Collingwood, Essendon, Hawthorn and Carlton to be the top four. In your gift giving, play to the fact that people love victors and give an AFL jersey from one of those teams.

5. Players dominate

Instead of thinking about which team should be on the AFL jersey you buy, just think about players. Many AFL players stand out to the extent that they become a brand above their team name. Because of this, many AFL fans love receiving these players' jerseys even if they don't play for their favourite teams.

As of 2015, fans loved Gary Ablett from the Gold Coast, but they also cheered hard for Nat Fyfe of Fremantle, Lance Franklin of the Sydney Swans and Joel Selwood of Geelong.

Chances are that almost any AFL fan would love a jersey bearing the number of one of these top four players.
